2. Facts in English
#1 - Kleptomaniac English! 💎🕵️
English has borrowed words from over 350 different languages, including "ballet" from French, "piano" from Italian, and "shampoo" from Hindi.
#2 - The Fun World of Calques! 👾
Calques are like direct translations with a twist. Instead of borrowing a word as it is, we translate it word-for-word. This process creates new terms in the borrowing language that closely mirror the original. Here’s some examples:
Word: Skyscraper
From (French): "Gratte-ciel"
Meaning: "Scrape-sky"
Fun Fact: Both terms describe those tall buildings that seem to touch the sky!
Word: Flea Market
From (French): "Marché aux puces"
Meaning: "Market of fleas"
Fun Fact: This term is perfect for those lively markets where you can find second-hand treasures.
Word: Beer Garden
From (German): "Biergarten"
Meaning: "Beer garden"
Fun Fact: Whether in English or German, it’s a great place to relax with friends and enjoy a cold brew.
#3 - Small in size, big in function: Acronyms! 💫
Acronyms are words formed by taking the first letters of a phrase and putting them together to make a new word. Here’s some examples:
Laser: "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation"
Radar: "Radio Detection and Ranging"
PIN: "Personal Identification Number"
ILL: I Love LinqiApp!😍💜
